Emperipolesis is an ultrastructural phenomenon in which a viable cell is seen lying within another cell in a single membrane-bound vacuole. This is a constant finding in Sinus Histiocytosis with Massive Lymphadenopathy, otherwise known as Rosai-Dorfman Disease which is a rare clinicopathological entity. We are reporting here two cases of SHML diagnosed clinically and pathologically at Cancer Institute, Madras. In both the cases the phenomenon of emperipolesis was observed in lymph node biopsy samples at the ultrastructural level, wherein several lymphocytes are seen in the cytoplasm of the histiocytes within membrane-bound vacuoles. |
